Akilah: successful breastfeeding only on one side
Breastfeeding is, for me one of the best experiences of motherhood. My daughter sometimes hums while feeding, I think she also loves it.
However I did experience a painful hiccup: I had an accident and fell on my left breast when Simi was three and a half months old. This meant I was only able to feed her on my right breast.
I won't go into the details of the agony of my right breast, which has still not fully healed. When it happened, I was initially extremely worried for Simi. I thought it would affect my milk production and hamper successful breastfeeding. This was not the case, even though Simi was now only feeding on one breast she would feed more regulary, miraculously my left breast started to produce more.
She is now close to six months, admittedly I did start her on solids earlier than I had planned to (4 months), she is doing incredibly well and still acquiring all the nutrients she can get from my breast milk. I went through a period of feeling terribly inadequate to my present state of feeling okay. Simi and I both get so much out of breastfeeding.

Many mums can only breastfeed on one side, for various health reasons. If this is your case, don't hesitate to contact a breastfeeding support group or a lactation consultant. They will be able to help you establish successful breastfeeding.
