My breastfeeding journey by Liz
My son Sam was born in May after 18 months of trying for a baby and three heartbreaking miscarriages, so I was adamant I would do my best for him and give breastfeeding my best shot.
For the first two weeks it was really painful, and I got a fever for a couple of days as my milk “came down” which I later found out can happen. I can understand why the breastfeeding problems make some Mums give up early on - but Sam's now nearly 6 months old and we're still going strong.
It's so quick and easy and there’s no sterilising or messing around with bottles. Not to mention (my) weight loss and the saving of about £700 on formula! I’ve also realised the breastfeeding in public is very easy – and actually loads of Mums do it, but you don’t notice them until you’re doing it yourself – so there’s no need to worry about what people will think.
I’ve only had positive comments about it. It’s also been a relief to have got through the first 6 months without him catching Swine Flu – I reckon the antibodies in my milk can only have helped that.
There’s nothing quite like the quiet moments when you’re feeding your own baby, I love it and will be quite sad to give it up.
Liz, mum to Sam.
